Das an der Ostküste Istriens, etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Pula und Rijeka (je 55 km) gelegene Rabac gehört zu den beliebtesten Bade- und Ferienorten Kroatiens. Am Ende einer tief eingeschnittenen malerischen Bucht der alte Ortskern und die belebte Hafenpromenade mit kleinen Geschäften und einladenden Restaurants und Cafés. Dahinter zieht sich der Ort über mehrere 'Terrassen' den steilen Hang hinauf. Eine Promenade (mit Badenischen in den Felsen) führt zu einem ca. 500 m entfernten Hotel- und Freizeitbereich mit breitem Kieselstrand und guten Sportmöglichkeiten. Am anderen Ortsende, nach Nordosten, weitere touristische Anlagen mit guten Sport-, Bade- und Freizeitmöglichkeiten (Segeln, Windsurfen, Tauchen, Tennis, Ballspiele, Minigolf, Boccia) sowie Restaurants (Fischspezialitäten), Bars, Diskotheken. Interessant die mittelalterliche Stadt Labin (5 km), die hoch über der Bucht 'thront'. Weitere Ausflugsmöglichkeiten sind Pula und die Brionischen Inseln (Nationalpark), das Seebad Opatija sowie die Inseln Cres, Losinj, Krk und Rab. Wöchentlich Bootsausflüge nach Venedig (Stand 2017).

Istrien

Istrien, die Halbinsel im Nordwesten Kroatiens, zwischen Triest und Rijeka, hat eine alte Tradition als Reiseziel. Nach Opatija, das damals noch Abbazia hieß, oder etwa nach Portoroz reiste die 'feine' österreichische Gesellschaft bereits um die Jahrhundertwende. Die Vorzüge von Istrien liegen auf der Hand: ein mildes, günstiges Klima und angenehme Wassertemperaturen, eine üppige mediterrane Vegetation und viele kulturgeschichtliche Denkmäler. In einer reizvollen und abwechslungsreichen Landschaft begeistern Steilküsten und Strände, meist aus Naturstein, Fels oder Kies. Einsame geschützte Buchten laden zum ungestörten Baden ein. Istrien ist eine touristisch gut erschlossene Region, die eine Vielzahl von Freizeit- und Unterhaltungsmöglichkeiten bietet. Die Nachfrage konzentriert sich auf wenige, besonders beliebte Orte: Die alten Städte Rovinj, Porec und Umag, die lebhafte Hauptstadt Pula im Süden, das malerisch gelegene Rabac sowie Opatija, ein vielbesuchtes Seebad mit einem Hauch kaiserlich-königlicher Riviera-Atmosphäre. Einen starken Kontrast zum bunten Treiben dieser Orte setzen die Hügel im Hinterland, dem 'Grünen Istrien', wo sich nur wenige Kilometer von der Küste entfernt eine andere Welt aufzutun scheint, mit verzaubert wirkenden Dörfern in einer verkarsteten Landschaft. Interessant die vielen Ausflugsmöglichkeiten (auf eigene Faust oder über touristische Agenturen): Triest und Venedig (per Schiff oder auf dem Landweg) und die märchenhaften Postojna-Grotten, Lipica für Pferdefreunde, die Brionischen Inseln sowie die großen Inseln in der Kvarner Bucht wie Krk, Cres, Losinj und Rab.
