'Venedig des Nordens' wird die auf 14 Inseln erbaute Hauptstadt Stockholm genannt, und ein Besuch dieser ‚schwimmenden Stadt‘ mit ihren weitläufigen Grünanlagen ist ein großartiges Erlebnis. Auch sollte man sich einen Bootsausflug in den vorgelagerten Schärengarten mit rund 25.000, zum offenen Meer hin immer kleiner werdenden Inseln auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen.
Der westlich von Stockholm gelegene Binnensee Mälaren, der drittgrößte des Landes, bezaubert mit tausenden von stillen Buchten und zahlreichen grünen Inseln. Nahezu 120 Kilometer erstreckt er sich nach Westen und wird dort durch einen Kanal mit dem Hjälmaren-See verbunden. Im Umland dieser Seen liegen tiefe Wälder, unzählige Wasserläufe und altes Kulturland. Die 'Wiege Schwedens' nennen die Einheimischen die Gegend um diese beiden Seen, hier liegen die Grabstätten der ersten Könige, die meisten Runensteine, die prächtigsten Schlösser, die stattlichsten Herrensitze und alte Kirchen mit gut erhaltenen Wandmalereien.
Eine lange Schärenküste, zahlreiche Seen, Flüsse und Kanäle prägen diese Region und bieten nicht nur dem Wassersportler umfangreiche Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Hunderte von Kilometern Wander- und Fahrradwege führen durch die abwechslungsreiche Landschaft, über Inseln und an fjordähnlichen, langgezogenen Buchten entlang, durch Naturschutzgebiete mit beeindruckender Tier- und Pflanzenwelt und auf Höhenzüge mit herrlicher Aussicht auf Flusstäler und fruchtbare Ebenen. In keiner anderen Landschaft in Schweden liegen Natur und Kultur so dicht beieinander wie hier.
