On the Region: Cherbourg with its fishing-, yacht-, cargo-, marine- and ferry port lies at the extreme tip of the peninsula. It is a city with a long and eventful history, which reflects in its many monuments. From this strategic point the ships sailed to the End of the World and many wars were fought, until D-Day in 1944. Also visit the “Cité de la Mer” with the highest cylindrical aquarium in the world and submarine « Le Redoutable ». One can also do many strolls around town. The Cotentin is very contrasty, situated at the 'End of the World'. The outermost point, Cap de la Hague, is a magnificent cape of evil beauty. One side, Val de Saire, gently slopes with green strands, and on the other side, Côte des Isles, rocks, bays and dunes are strung together. The countryside of the inland consists of green hedges, quaint valleys, beautiful houses, castles and villages. There are wonderful beaches, fishing villages like Saint Vaast La Hougue and historical towns like Cherbourg, und of course the memories of the Landing of the Allieds in 1944.
