Marina di Castagneto Carducci / Costa degli Etruschi area

Over 20% of the Etruscan Coast comprises Parks, protected areas, nature oases, and fauna reserves.
Nature is not just a setting, but the very essence of this land with its dense stands of pine trees, woods and countryside rich with colours and scents.
Of particular note are the Bolgheri WWF Oasis, a wet zone of international importance, the Magona Park and its biogenetic oasis, the Livorno Hills Park, which is of considerable historical-naturalistic interest, the Rimigliano Park flora and fauna oasis, the Orti-Bottagone oasis and the Sterpaia and Montioni parks.A temperate climate throughout the year, with particularly mild springs, long summers and infrequent rainfall during autumn/winter,makes for enjoyable holidays all year round.Etruscan settlements by the sea, like the Baratti-Populonia Archaeological Park, museums full of Etruscan, Roman and Villanovan artefacts, such as those at Rosignano Marittimo, Cecina and Piombino, exhibitions and shows of international significance on the history of these places all bear witness to the historical importance of the Costa degli Etruschi.
The San Silvestro Archaeo-mineral Park at Venturina is a real open-air museum where organized routes allow visitors to follow the various stages of metalworking in Etruscan and medieval times.painters like Modigliani were born, and where Livorno-born Giovanni Fattori, helped found the Macchiaioli school. Permanent collections and internationally significant exhibitions keep this important heritage alive. Long-standing cultural institutions such as the CEL, Armunia and the Mascagni Musical Institute play an important role in promoting culture.History lives on in the medieval towns and villages of Bolgheri, Populonia, Castagneto Carducci, Bibbona, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima, small gems set among green hills and woods, a stone's throw from the sea.Livorno was planned in the 1500's by the Medici as an "ideal city" and still preserves reminders of its past, such as the historical "Venice" quarter, the Fortresses, and the navigable canals which surround the town centre. The gastronomic specialities of the Costa degli Etruschi are known all over the world for their richness and variety.Fresh-caught fish is the main ingredient of hundreds of delicious recipes, from the famous cacciucco (fish stew), to black rice with squid ink, dentex, gilthead, calamari, shellfish and blue fish (like mackerel) now enjoying a revival, all cooked with flair and skill.Inland, dishes feature meat, such as beef from prized "Chianina" cattle, and game, particularly wild boar, All dishes are accompanied by vegetables. Local specialities include cheeses, honey, bread, cakes, chickpea "cake" and Livorno punch.
The DOC wines of Bolgheri, Val di Cornia and Bibbona are produced along the Wine Route, as are world-renowned wines such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Olive oil is also a product of excellence.Churches of various religious faiths can be visited in this town, which has strong cosmopolitan traditions.Costa degli Etruschi thermal spas provide a double opportunity: health treatments and holidays based on wellbeing and relaxation. At Venturina in Val di Cornia, a stone's throw from the sea and medieval villages, the Valle del Sole (sulphur-calcium-magnesium-bicarbonate bearing waters) and Calidario thermal spas offer treatments for health and psycho/physical wellbeing.
The Valle del Sole thermal spa, already known in Etruscan/Roman times, is a fully equipped fitness centre with 36°C natural spring waters. The Costa degli Etruschi offers many opportunities for sport.
Over 90km of coast and beaches, that have been awarded the European Union's Blue Flag for water quality and services, offer the chance to practice all kinds of water sport, from underwater fishing to sailing and windsurfing.Well-organized harbours and marinas provide berthing facilities for boats. Both amateur and professional cycling is practised.Marked routes for the former wind through the hills or the pinewoods next to the sea, while professional cycling teams train in specially equipped structures with efficient services.
Trails for hiking or horse riding can be found in Livorno and all along the Costa degli Etruschi.Modern tourists increasingly want tailor-made holidays. An area's hospitality can also be measured by its ability to satisfy differing needs. The Costa degli Etruschi has resources and structures able to satisfy all kinds of needs and interests. For this reason, we are working to offer specific "packages" and made to measure holidays for everyone.
In Marina di Castagneto/C the sun always shines but by bad weather you can go on interesting trips to the near Baratti or to the Elba Island or to one of the most beautiful cultural Tuscan towns such as Pisa, Florence, Volterra, Lucca....PISA: The Tuscan province of Pisa has behind it the Pisa Mount and on the horizon the sea. The Arno runs through it and the tourists can admire it walking on its bright sides, surrounded by noble Renaissance palaces and a lot of small medieval alleys. The green Piazza dei Miracoli contains four masterpieces of the Romanic-Pisan style: the Cathedral, the Baptistry, the leaning Tower and the monumental graveyard.......
SAN GIMIGNANO: lies among the sunny hills of the Elsa Valley, on which you find the grapes of the ancient Vernaccia, surrounded by medieval thirteenth-century-walls, that today are an open gallery for many art exhibitions. From its Etruscan origins, testified by the finding of tombs in its territory, San Gimignano developed remarkably about the year 1000 and became an important centre of commercial activities. Since the twelfth century it was a free commune and after the fierce conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines it lost its autonomy and became one town with Forence in 1351. But formerly the merchants (in the meantime rich aristocrats) built its historical centre with its numerous towers, that today are admired by the incredulous tourists......
SIENA: Tuscan town and Italian capital in the Middle Ages. Siena rises on three hills between the valleys of the rivers Arbia and Elsa and has a wonderful panoramic position. At the beginning Siena was an Etruscan settlement, but a legend tells that the town was founded by Senio and Aschio, Remos children. Siena was certainly a Roman military colony at Augustus time and became a free county in the Carolingian age; later on in the tenth and eleventh century it was run by the bishops and became a free Ghibelline-commune. Thanks to the flowering commercial and financial activities there was a very big economic and urbanistic growth. In this time were built the characteristic medieval system, the mighty boundary wall and the Piazza del Campo, the heart of the inhabitants life. This piazza is fan-shaped and is on the convergence point among the three hills on which the town rises. Today Siena is visited by many tourists, who are attracted and fascinated by its buildings and by the cheerfulness of the inhabitants, who have maintained an ancient traditional festival, the Palio in the Piazza del Campo......
FLORENCE: Florence and its art are inseparable. The big Italian painting began here, the Renaissance created the most important works of civil and religious architecture, sculpture and painting. But all these arts were unthinkable without the big previous flowering artistic time of the Romanic and Gotic era between 1000 and 1300, when Florence was economically very important; of this time are the Baptistry of San Giovanni, the Church of San Miniato al Monte, the Bargello Palace and Palazzo Vecchio (the Old Palace), the Churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce, the beginning of the construction of the Cathedral and of the bell tower. Responsible for the architectural renewal was Arnolfo di Cambio, for painting Cimabue and Giotto, his talented and revolutionary pupil. The fifteenth century is famous for three great artists: Masaccio, Donatello and Brunelleschi, the sixteenth century for Michelangelo. Their works were very important for the Florentine painting, sculpture and architecture. The roll of the artist changed with their art.....
